A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

A single trader, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other individuals also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Grows

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule presented on recently would prevent federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from elections to politics.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
